Arbeitszeugnis: how to get a work reference in Germany (with sample emails)
When a job in Germany ends, you can ask your employer for a written reference, the Arbeitszeugnis. It proves your experience in new applications, and German employers read it closely.
Every employee in Germany can ask for a written reference (Arbeitszeugnis) when the employment ends (§ 109 Gewerbeordnung). This includes part-time jobs and Minijobs. The reference has to be benevolent („wohlwollend“) and true, which is why a coded „reference language“ developed.
Types
- Einfaches Zeugnis (simple): only what you did and for how long.
- Qualifiziertes Zeugnis (qualified): also rates your performance and conduct. The employer writes it only if you ask, so always ask for this one.
- Zwischenzeugnis (interim): while you still work there. The law gives no general right to it, but with a reason (a new manager, a planned job change) most employers issue one, and some collective agreements (Tarifvertrag) grant it.
Who issues it?
- Your employer: write to HR (Personalabteilung) or your manager.
- Temp agency work (Adecco, Randstad and the like): legally your employer is the agency, so ask the agency. Ask them to name the company you worked at (Einsatzbetrieb) and your tasks there.
When to ask
Ask as soon as the job ends: employment contracts and collective agreements can set short deadlines (Ausschlussfristen). The original is issued on signed paper (the law excludes the electronic form). Scan it to a PDF for your applications.

„Stets vorbildlich“ about your conduct means very good. Managers named before colleagues and a closing sentence with thanks and good wishes are good signs too.
If something is wrong
Ask politely for a correction first. Under German case law, the employer has to justify a grade below „befriedigend“ (3); if you want a better grade than that, you have to show why. If you cannot agree, ask a lawyer or your union.
References from your home country
Ask former employers for a signed reference letter stating your role, tasks and dates, and add a German or English translation. Official procedures such as recognition or visas may need a sworn translation.
