Job interviews in Germany: common questions and how to answer
You've been invited – now the interview counts. German employers ask surprisingly similar questions, so good preparation goes a long way, even if your German isn't perfect yet.
An interview in Germany usually takes 30 to 60 minutes. In small companies you often talk directly to the owner; in larger ones to HR and your future manager.
The most common questions
„Erzählen Sie etwas über sich.“ (Tell us about yourself.)
Not your life story – two minutes on your career: what you do now, what you did before, and why this job is the logical next step.
„Warum möchten Sie bei uns arbeiten?“ (Why do you want to work here?)
Show that you have done your research: products, customers, how they work. Link it to your own goals.
„Was sind Ihre Stärken und Schwächen?“ (Strengths and weaknesses?)
Back every strength with an example. For a weakness, choose something real but not critical and say what you are doing about it: „Mein Deutsch am Telefon ist noch nicht so sicher, deshalb mache ich gerade einen B2-Kurs.“
„Wann können Sie anfangen?“ (When can you start?)
Know your notice period. The statutory minimum in Germany is four weeks to the 15th or the end of a month; your contract may set a longer one.
Questions they shouldn't ask
Questions about pregnancy, family planning, religion, political party or sexual orientation are generally not allowed in German interviews. You don't have to answer them.

- Driving licence or other key certificates

Is the interview in German or English?+
Usually in German if the job ad is in German. International companies often interview in English. If you are unsure, ask when you confirm the appointment.
Will my travel costs be reimbursed?+
If the employer invites you and does not rule it out in advance, they generally have to cover reasonable costs. Job seekers can also ask the employment agency or Jobcenter for support.
How soon will I hear back?+
Often within one or two weeks. It is fine to ask at the end of the interview when they expect to decide.
