Germany's Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte): who qualifies and how points work
The Opportunity Card lets skilled people from outside the EU come to Germany to look for a job for up to a year. Here is a plain-language overview.

Basic requirements
- Qualification: a university degree or at least two years of vocational training recognised by the state where you obtained it
- Language: at least A1 German or B2 English
- Financial means: proof that you can support yourself at first, usually via a blocked account (Sperrkonto)
If your qualification is fully recognised in Germany, you qualify without the points system.
The points system
Otherwise you need at least 6 points. Points can come from, for example:
- Partial recognition of your qualification in Germany
- Work experience in your field in recent years
- German skills (more points for A2, B1, B2+)
- English skills (C1 or higher)
- Age (more points under 35)
- Previous legal stays in Germany
- A spouse who also meets the requirements
- A qualification in a shortage occupation

Working while you search
With an Opportunity Card you can generally:
- work up to 20 hours a week in a side job, and
- do trial work (Probebeschäftigung) with a potential employer.
Once you find a job, you switch to a suitable residence permit such as the skilled worker visa or the EU Blue Card.
